Mountain Ol Doinyo Lengai
is located 220 Kilometers away from Arusha town, Tanzania. "Ol
Doinyo Lengai" means "The Mountain of
God" in the Maasai language of the native people.
The mountain faces Lake Natron to the north, mountain Gelai to the
east and Leparakash plains to the northwest. It is regular to see
zebra, antelope, jackal, dik-dik, Maasai giraffe and numerous birdlife
while driving from the base of Mount Ol Doinyo Lengai at an altitude
of 1140 meters.
Ol Doinyo Lengai is an active volcano standing at an altitude of
2,980 m (9,777 ft) above the sea level and is part of the volcanic
system of the East African Rift Valley. It is unique among active
volcanoes in that it sometimes produces natrocarbonatite lava, a
unique occurrence of volcanic carbonatite. The lava is also much
cooler than other lavas; being only about 950 degrees F (510 degrees
C) compared to temperatures over 2000 degrees F (~1100 degrees C)
for basaltic lavas. Natrocarbonatite is the most fluid lava in the
The record of eruptions on the mountain dates to 1883, and flows
were also recorded between 1904 and 1910 and again between 1913
and 1915. A major eruption took place in June 1917, which resulted
in volcanic ash being deposited about 48 kilometers away.
A similar eruption took place for several months in 1926 and between
July and December 1940, resulting in the ash being deposited as
far as Loliondo, which is 100 kilometers away. Several minor eruptions
of lava were observed in 1954, 1955, 1958 the early 1960s. Volcanic
activity in the mountain continued and on August 14, 1966 it erupted
again with the current being on July 12, 2007 which caused earth
tremors in Kenya and Tanzania.
Mountain Ol Doinyo Lengai with all the volcanic activities it has
still stands as a place worth to visit and climb since the eruption
has ceased and just some normal activities of bubbles are take place.
